Customer description

One of the larger container terminals in the port of Rotterdam with hundreds of trucks and ships every day, where a smooth flow is crucial for both efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Challenge

Unpredictable peak loads and limited predictive insights resulted in yard congestion and waiting times for incoming and departing trucks. This led to dissatisfied customers, delays and suboptimal deployment of staff and equipment.

Solution

Blackbirds developed an AI model that uses real-time and historical data (including ship data, weather forecasts and truck arrivals) to pre-optimize yard layout and truck planning. The model was integrated into the existing planning tool, allowing the team to work with real-time predictive insights.

Approach

  1. Data inventory and integration
    All available sources (AIS data, truck movements, weather forecasts) were unlocked and linked.
  2. Model development
    Based on historical patterns and planning logic, we developed an AI model that predicts occupancy rates, expected delays and required capacity per timeslot.
  3. Live integration into the planning process
    The model was built directly into the existing operational planning tool so that operational planners could benefit from the forecasts without additional actions.
  4. Evaluation and adjustment
    The system was fine-tuned based on team feedback and real-world performance.
