Salaried employment
With an average salary, you will receive a fixed monthly salary, based on experience and contract hours.
Blackbirds
At Blackbirds, you will receive a fixed basic salary based on your seniority in a comparable position (scales: junior, medior, senior). And you can take three steps per scale based on the agreements and goals you have agreed with your supervisor.
This basic salary provides you with income security. The fixed base salary is slightly below the average salaried salary.
Freelance
As a Freelancer, you do not have a basic income, but it is common to pay yourself an advance. This can be your entire profit, but also part of it. If you don't work, you have no income either.
Salaried employment
In employment, you are sometimes entitled to a bonus or profit sharing based on the performance of the company, team or individual. However, your fixed salary always accounts for the vast majority of your total income.
Blackbirds
Flexible pay is relatively high for us. This way, you will receive 70% of your personal turnover as variable gross income.
This results from the simple calculation of your hourly rate times the billable hours for a customer. You will receive up to 50% of your turnover each month, provided it exceeds your gross salary + employer costs (this is a surcharge that we calculate over your fixed salary, which pays for things like pension, travel costs, training and much more). In January, you will receive the remaining 20% over your entire year. Such an annual bonus can quickly amount to twenty thousand euros. As a result, you will feel the result of your work in your salary every month.
In short: if you work a lot for clients at the highest possible rate, you will benefit immediately.
Freelance
Freelancers receive 100% flexible income. This seems attractive, but it also provides many things that you then have to arrange, such as tax, pension, insurance, leave and training, to name but a few. You can't work for a client even the time that you spend every month doing these things. At the same time, the flexibility is also nice. For example, you can decide to work really hard for a few months and then do nothing for a month and live on the extra money earned.
Salaried employment
In employment, your total income usually consists of the sum of your annual salary, vacation pay and sometimes a performance bonus or profit distribution.
Blackbirds
At Blackbirds, your gross monthly salary is supplemented to 70% of your realized personal turnover. This starts with a gross monthly bonus based on your results from the previous month. This is 50% of your realised turnover in the month before, from which your gross monthly salary and employer costs are deducted. The remaining amount is added to your gross monthly salary and paid out. You will receive vacation pay in May and the gross annual bonus in January. The annual bonus is 20% of your annual turnover. All of this results in a fixed salary that changes based on your billable hours.
Freelance
Freelancers receive 100% flexible income.
Salaried employment
At most companies, you receive an annual training budget to keep your skills up to date and expand them. Or a flexible budget from which you can arrange things such as training courses, but also, for example, extra leave days, a company bike, sports and books or subscriptions to professional literature.
Blackbirds
The data management world is constantly and rapidly changing. This also requires something from us as an employer and, in particular, from you as an employee. That is why we offer a large personal training budget.
You may recognize it, but we believe you'll learn the most by trying it out. That is why perhaps the most important part of our High Flyer program is that we actively work on knowledge exchange between stack experts, principals and consultancy skills. We actively facilitate this.
As a Blackbirds team, we also stay up to date by visiting the best conferences and through our partners. Of course, these are in addition to your training budget.
Freelance
As a freelancer, you are fully responsible for your development. And you also have to organize this yourself.
Salaried employment
Most companies offer you statutory travel allowances. Some offer compensation based on travel kilometers, while other employers also offer lease cars for certain roles. A green trend is underway, where mobility budgets encourage us to do this with as little impact on the environment as possible. Think of a company bike, an NS business card and a fully electric vehicle fleet.

Our business concept is sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Blackbirds operates regionally from a hub in a city. So from a nice office, and with consultants and clients from the vicinity. This results in less travel time for our employees and is better for the environment. That is why we offer an NS business card to our consultants, with which they can easily travel for work by public transport, bicycle or, if necessary, other transport.
We also have standard Swap bicycles at our locations, which employees can use.
Freelance
As a freelancer, you arrange your own transport. Sometimes you can organize this in a fiscally attractive way from your company.
Salaried employment
At most companies, you will receive 8% vacation pay over your fixed salary. Some employers pay this monthly on top of your monthly salary. Most employers do this annually in May.
Blackbirds
At Blackbirds, you will receive 8% vacation pay on your fixed salary in May.
Freelance
As a freelancer, you do not receive vacation pay.
Salaried employment
For employers with a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) scheme, compensation is common. Employers who organize this differently often have a telephone allowance to compensate for call/data costs incurred.
Blackbirds
Blackbirds works on the basis of the BYOD principle. That is why Blackbirds employees receive a total of 60 euros (25 euros for mobile phones and 35 euros for laptops) every month.
Freelance
Freelancers arrange and pay for all the devices they need themselves.
Salaried employment
Although there is a trend that more and more companies are actively investing and organizing around the theme of health, there are many companies that offer it passively or not yet. So it really varies from employer to employer how this is implemented.
Blackbirds
At Blackbirds, you'll receive a healthy lunch, provide delicious fruit at work and other healthy snacks. We also organize sporting activities with and for the team.
Freelance
As a freelancer, you are responsible for this yourself. And you also have to organize this yourself. At the same time, you are fully flexible.
Salaried employment
Most employers offer continued payment of salary during illness for a certain period of time. Such an arrangement is often laid down in a manual. In addition, an annual vacation leave of 25-30 days is common. There are also statutory leave rules regarding maternity leave for both parents and parental leave. Some employers (partly) contribute to leave, while other employers may have unpaid leave.

In summary, Blackbirds offers you what is also legally established. Blackbirds offers continued payment of salary during illness for a certain period, 25 vacation days, birth and parental leave.
Freelance
A freelancer can insure himself for disability or illness. A freelancer often also takes an entrepreneurial risk up to an achieved level, so as not to lose too much in premiums and to continue to experience the financial benefit of entrepreneurship. Leave is possible, but it means that there is no income in return. Freelancers actually always build a financial buffer for a period of time between two assignments, illness, vacation or leave.

At Blackbirds, you get a development budget to train yourself in a targeted manner. But we are convinced that you learn the most “on the job”. And by experimenting. We organize these two things within our “High Flyer” program. Freelancers are alone and therefore naturally have no team activities. What you do see is that some of the freelancers are active in certain business clubs or professional organizations and organize and undertake activities from these peer groups.

Most companies offer you a decent pension plan. Of course, this always varies from employer to employer, so it's good to understand how it works beforehand.

In principle, within your work description, you do what your employer asks you to do. Failure to do so may even have legal consequences. However, there is often room to do certain activities more or less, or to grow towards a different role. Saying no to doing your work is therefore unusual in a conventional working relationship.

Blackbirds matches assignments as closely as possible to the consultant's expertise and wishes. This also enables our employees to work as much as they want.
Of course, the substantive match is not always 100% and, fortunately, there is also understanding. By the way, a consultant can also say “no” to us. We will then look for another assignment.

As a freelancer, you have full influence on the project to be carried out. However, the practice is that freelancers also hire work if it does not meet their needs 100%, because they also have to/want to earn money and the perfect assignment is not always available.
Salaried employment
Working more or less is not so flexibly arranged. You have a contract for a certain number of hours. Sometimes there is an overtime arrangement, where you also get paid for hours of overtime.

At Blackbirds, your fixed salary is fixed regardless of your hours. However, your flexible remuneration changes with the amount of hours you are billable. We assume that you are approximately 80-90% declarable. In that case, you will also see a bonus for your hours worked on your paycheck every month and a big bonus over the entire year in January.
Freelance
As a freelancer, you'll notice it immediately when you're working less. Your income really changes hourly or, in some industries, even by 15 minutes or 6 minutes. But you are very flexible. You can choose to work much more for a period of time and then work a month less, for example. You just have no financial security from an employment contract and a fixed salary.
